Chloride

Chloride is one of the body’s three major electrolytes (the other two are sodium and potassium).

Electrolytes are largely responible for osmotic pressure in body fluids.


BIOLOGICAL FUNCTION & EFFECT:

• maintenance — in conjunction with calcium and magnesium — of nerve transmission and normal contraction / relaxation activities of muscles, including the heart

• maintenance for normal PH balance

• necessary to maintain the normal acidity of the stomach


• EFFECTS OF DEPLETION

• Depletion effects are rare but can be caused by extensive diarrhea or vomiting, adrenal insufficiency and long-term use of diuretics. Symptoms include the following:

• weakness
• poor digestion
• loss of appetite
• hair loss
