Magnesium

Magnesium is an essential nutrient responsible for over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body.

BIOLOGICAL FUNCTION & EFFECT:

• is required for metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates

• is vital for health of nervous and muscular tissue

• is required for the activity of calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin C

• is a co-factor in production of ATP

• reduces risk of cardiovascular disease. If given intravenously during early stages of a heart attack, results of death decrease by 70 percent.

• magnesium has been shown to lower blood pressur in over 30 clinical trials

• relieves PMS symptoms

• may reduce incidence of asthma attacks

• may be more important for bone health than calcium

• helps bind tooth enamel

• EFFECTS OF DEPLETION

Food processing is a major cause of magnesium depletion. Thus, marginal deficiency appears to be widespread.

Deficiency symptoms include:

• muscle cramps
• weakness
• insomnia
• loss of appetite
• GI disorders
• kidney stones
• fear
• osteoporosis
• nervousness
• restlessness
• irritability
• anxiety
• confusion

• SOURCES

Nuts, legumes, cereal grains, dark green leafy vegetables.

Sources of magnesium vary with soil content..

• NOTES

It is now known that many heart attacks occur in people with healthy hearts. Magnesium deficiency allows levels of calcium to increase which can cause cardiac muscle spasm resulting in heart attack and frequent death.

Magnesium is a nutritional superstar when it comes to cardiovascular disease.
