Potassium

Potassium is one of the body’s three major electrolytes (the other two are chloride and sodium).

Ninety-eight percent of total body potassium resides inside the body's cells.


BIOLOGICAL FUNCTION & EFFECT:

• plays an essential role in nerve conduction

• plays an essential role in the beating of the heart

• maintains — along with sodium and chloride — water balance throughout the body

• has been shown in some studies to be effective in preventing hypertension and lowering existing high blood pressure

• one study reported that one serving of potassium-rich fruits and vegetables provided a 40 percent reduction in the risk of stroke
