Sodium

Sodium is one of the body’s three major electrolytes (the other two are chloride and potassium).

Electrolytes are largely responible for osmotic pressure in body fluids.

BIOLOGICAL FUNCTION & EFFECT:

Blood pressure. Sodium has a major role in the regulation of blood pressure.

• Sodium ions play a critical role in the transmission of electrochemical impulses for nerve function and muscle contraction.

• Sodium helps regulate the acid / alkaline balance in the blood and lymph nodes.

• Sodium helps make the cell walls permeable and facilitate transport of materials across cell membranes.

Sodium helps regulate the transport and excretion of CO2.

• EFFECTS OF DEPLETION

Symptoms of a sodium deficiency, although rare because of sodium availability, are the following:

• msucle weakness
• poor concentration
• memory loss
• dehydration
• loss of appetite

• SOURCES

Table salt.

• NOTES

Sodium, at high levels, are associated with high blood pressure.
