Vitamin D

Calciferol — vitamin D — is actually a hormone precursor which can be manufactured in the body.

However, since the disease rickets is related to a calciferol deficiency, the hormone precursor has been classified as a vitamin.

Vitamin D was isolated in 1930 and is known as the “sunshine” vitamin. It is formed in the body by the action of the sun’s ultraviolet rays on the skin..

BIOLOGICAL FUNCTION & EFFECT:

• Vitamin D is an important growth nutrient for infants and children

• promotes absorption of calcium and phosphorus

• is involved in bone formation

• regulates serum levels of calcium and phosphorus

• may help prevent osteoporosis

• supports people with psoriasis

• enhances the immune system by stimulating the activity of macrophages

Vitamin D can be toxic at high doseas (dosage range is 200 to 800 IU) daily).

• EFFECTS OF DEPLETION

• rickets

• skeletal problems in children such as knock-knees and bowed legs

• (in adults) rheumatic pain, muscle weakness, increased bone fractures, gradual hearing loss

• increased risk of osteoporosis
• tooth decay

• phosphorus retention in the kidneys

• SOURCES

Vitamin D occurs is small amounts in butter, cream, egg yolks, and liver, but mostly from fortified milk.

• NOTES

Osteomalacia is the adult equivalent of rickets.

There is some indication that vitamin D might be helpful in some cancers. Geographic areas with the least amount of sunlight have the highest rate of colorectal and breast cancer.

The active form of vitamin D — calciferol — has some inhibitory activity against human melanoma, leukemia, breast lymphoma and colon cancer cells.
