Vitamin K

Vitamin K — phytonadione — is a group of three vitamins called quiones.

K1 occurs in green plants, K2 is synthesized by intestinal bacteria and K3 is manufactured synthetically.

The Ks are fat-soluble nutrients first noted in 1935.

BIOLOGICAL FUNCTION & EFFECT:

• blood clotting

• necessary for the syntheisis of osteocalcin, a unique protein in bone which attracts calcium to bone tissue

• osteoporosis - since vitamin K plays a significant role in calcification of bone, it could play a role in the prevention and support of individuals with osteoporosis

• EFFECTS OF DEPLETION

• easy bleeding

• skeletal disorders such as rickets, osteoporosis and osteomalacia

• SOURCES

Leafy-green vegetables and members of the cabbage family.

• NOTES

If there is adequate good intestinal bacteria (probiotics), our own bodies synthesize vitamin K. If this synthesis takes place, we are not dependent on food for this nutrient.
